Latest Animal and Pet News - Laurie Kay Olson

I write on the latest animal news and most interesting animal stories. I come to PetsLady with a background in print journalism for the Colorado Daily newspaper. Some of my favorite assignments there included theraputic horseback riding and Canine Companions for Independence, so this is a natural fit. Living in Boulder, Colorado, where wildlife abounds, I am frequently dealing with deer, fox, skunks, squirrels, rabbits, snakes, birds, and mice. My cat, Naomi, helps round out the menagerie around me.

Dish-Washing Cat
Posted on August 30, 2019

Apparently old cats do learn new tricks. At 16  Rookie has taken up pre-washing dishes for his mom. Something tells me that he really isn't a rookie at doing this.

Bandit Dog
Posted on August 29, 2019

I don't know why I was named for a type of criminal. I'm really a very sweet dog.

Bra Dog
Posted on August 28, 2019

When you get out of the shower and find your dog frolicking about the bedroom it does make you pause to think. Has he trying it on? Or is he trying to tell you something about his gender identity.

Police Cat
Posted on August 27, 2019

I don't know. I'm thinking that I should have been more clear when I filled out my application.

Cute Dog
Posted on August 26, 2019

This has got to be the most frustrating day ever. Mom, I'm sorry, I can't find the stick you threw anywhere. Can't you spring for a nice, brightly colored tennis ball?

Prairie Dogs
Posted on August 25, 2019

Prairie dogs live over much of the Western and parts of the Mid-Western United States. Black-tailed prairie dogs, like these, are common in my area of Colorado.

Mystical Raven

Dog Jail
Posted on August 23, 2019

This precious pup is not really in jail, she is just pretending. Of course with that face she wouldn't be in long if she were in jail.

Patient Pooch
Posted on August 22, 2019

I've taken up a new hobby. Stalking. Yep, that's right. I follow Mom all over the house because I love her so much and she knows where the treats are. If she's not home I follow Dad.

Drawer Cat
Posted on August 21, 2019

Cat lovers know that they leave drawers open at their own risk. These openings are cat magnets. Cats will immediately show up to snoop, dig, and/or nest. Oh, and shed. All over your clean clothes.

Damselfly Riding a Goosefeather
Posted on August 20, 2019

Now here is something you don't see every day -- or any day -- a damselfly using a goose feather as a raft to go sailing. If he'd start up his wings he'd even have an outboard motor.

Beautiful Black Cat
Posted on August 17, 2019

Today is Black Cat Appreciation Day and this sweet kitty is here to celebrate. You will notice from this photo that black cats are not completely black, but also have dark brown fur. That's why my family's black cat was named Mahogany.

Bees are incredibly busy creatures and they have been cited as being the most important animal on the planet.

It isn't often that we get to see a draft horse like a Clydesdale enjoying the beach at full gallop. She's literally flying over the water.

This is the very face of love with those soulful brown eyes, perky ears, and that hint of "got food?" in her countenance.

There is nothing quite like dining poolside during the summer months -- even if you do drag your fabulous tail feathers in the water.

Posted on August 11, 2019

Okay, Mom, go ahead and throw the stick. G'head. G'head. Can I get you anything else while I'm out?

Guard Dog
Posted on August 10, 2019

Is it a bird? Is it a squirrel? No. It's Supercat -- that insipid pest from next door. I don't care if she can leap tall fences in a single bound, she drives me nuts!

Western Tanager
Posted on August 9, 2019

This bright and beautiful boy is fairly common in the Western United States. I saw a number of them in my yard around the time this photo was taken.

Guilt-Producing Dog
Posted on August 8, 2019

For those who believe that mothers are the best at producing feelings of guilt in a person obviously never owned a dog (or a cat).

Grasshopper
Posted on August 7, 2019

Sometimes you just have to march to the beat of your own drum and leave the grass behind and become a dandelion-hopper.

Snowy Egret
Posted on August 6, 2019

Peacocks may get all the press for showing off, but other birds can do pretty well at holding their own at showing off. This snowy egret has got it going on.
