"Periodontal disease is the most common clinical condition occurring in adult dogs and cats, and is entirely preventable," according to the American Veterinary Dental College. In the wild, canines and felines eat the raw meat and bones of their prey and the abrasion of those foods help keep their teeth clean, but domesticated cats and dogs typically dine on processed foods which don't abrade their teeth adequately.
