With the increased advocacy for humane laws for farm animals and
domestic pets, has also come more advocacy groups, shelters, and rescue
and shelter personnel, many who have started their own businesses,
particularly no-kill shelters.  To provide these extra services, there
needs to be access to new education in these fields... and some
universities in the U.S., like the Humane Society University (HSU), are starting undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

The Marine Corps base at Miramar in San Diego, CA has an innovative
program for inmates of its brig. Those prisoners who qualify for the
program get to train service dogs that later give their service to
'fellow' Marines wounded in combat.  It's a win-win situation.

The same lab that invented InCaSe, the blood test to screen for cancer in dogs, has a new test to determine gastrointestinal cancer in cats.  Unlike InCaSe, VDI-TK
is not a screening test and it cannot detect all cancers; what it can
do is quickly differentiate between inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and
intestinal lymphomas, both relatively common diseases in cats.
