The New York Aquarium at Coney Island was amongst the many businesses threatened when Hurricane Sandy caused ocean waters to surge last week. With the facility's power out and its life-support systems damaged, the fates of thousands of resident fish, mammals, birds and reptiles hung in the balance. Now, thanks to heroes inside and out of the aquarium, life in the (enormous) fish bowl is finally on its way back to normal.

Last week, after more than 30 years without being seen, the Japanese
Ministry of the environment announced the sad news that the Japanese river otter and
several other species extinct. The otter once numbered in the millions
in the island nation and was over-hunted for their fur and lost miles of
habitat due to urban growth and pollution.
