Are you the kind of animal lover who would be willing to take a pie in
the face to help raise awareness and funds for shelter and rescue pets
across the country? Then you may be up for the Pies 4 Paws challenge. It
is the animal answer to the Ice Bucket Challenge that raced across the
country to raise money for ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). This one is just
warmer and stickier -- and just as much fun.

This challenge was started by animal activist and NBC News correspondent Jill Rappaport. Participants in the challenge are invited to take a pie in the face, adopt a pet from a shelter or donate, and nominate another person to do the same. Celebrities involved in the pie face-plant include Robert Redford and Meredith Viera (whose dog also took the challenge). Viera nominated Matt Lauer, Betty White, and Howard and Beth Stern.

Rappaport launched the campaign along with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) to coincide with the beginning of October, which is National Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog month, and the holiday season -- a time when shelter animals are most in need of a home.

If you want to get involved, take a pie in the face, and get a photo or video of it. Upload your proof to social media with the hashtag #JillRappaportsPies4Paws, make a donation to the shelter or rescue group of your choice, and challenge others to do the same.

Together we can make the world a better place for animals -- and just a little sweeter. Make my pie French Silk and aim for the mouth. Woo hoo!
