Science dog goes viral

Service dogs are an essential component to the countless individuals depending on the animals to lead full lives. We are fortunate to live in a day and age where their capacity has expanded significantly, such as providing us with medical alerts, emotional support and performing a number of other important tasks. Due to this expansion in training and talents it should probably come as no surprise to learn that one California service dog has taken on the role of science dog in order to accompany her master.

She Blinded Me with Science

Allie Spencer is a college student enrolled at California Polytechnic State University where she and her service dog in training, Annie, attend chem labs every Friday. Because the classes come with requirements that extend to all of its participants, as would be expected in that environment, each and every member must wear goggles, including Annie. In her case, though, her protective eyewear is being referred to as "doggles."

Going Viral

Spencer, dressing the dog as instructed in booties and safety goggles, allowed fellow student and teammate Tara Howard to snap a picture of Annie in her science dog getup. Howard couldn’t resist posting the image to Twitter, not thinking that it would go viral. In her post she writes, “One of my teammates has a dog in her Chem lab…he’s also required to wear goggles during lab.” Howard found out later that “he’s” really a she.

Roles of Service Dogs

So far slipping into the role of science dog for a service dog on Fridays is a new one, but it’s definitely one social media fans are enjoying. For Annie, it’s just another day with her owner doing her job. Spencer was quoted as saying, “In that picture she was actually waiting for me to come back to the table. She stands up when I walk away and waits for me to come back. She’s really well behaved.” She’s also pretty darn hysterical in that picture.
