A distressed seal pup rescued from a beach in Wales has been named for Theon Greyjoy, a popular character in the hit TV fantasy series Game of Thrones.
Young “Theon” was discovered on the beach near Tywyn, a town in west-central Wales whose name roughly translates as – wait for it – “beach”. The pup appeared to be lethargic and unable to move its left flipper.
A concerned member of the public alerted staff at RSPCA Cymru, who sent animal collection officer Will Galvin to Tywyn where he evaluated the seal's condition.
Galvin then arranged for the pup to be taken to a specialist wildlife center at Stapeley Grange to be further examined and entered into their rehabilitation program.
“Rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife is a huge part of the RSPCA's work in Wales,” explained Galvin to a reporter from the Rhyl, Prestatyn & Abergele Journal, “and I'm just happy to have been able to help this young seal pup."
Theon currently enjoys close monitoring at Stapeley Grange after being treated with medication to help heal some muscle injuries. He's not without company, however, as it seems he's joined an extended Game of Thrones clan!
Indeed, staff at the wildlife center have nicknamed a number of seals in their care after Game of Thrones personalities, though we're pleased to assure readers the seals are getting along far better than their human character counterparts.
