Peridontal disease is the most prevalent medical problem in domestic dogs and cats. By the time your pet is 3 years old, he or she will very likely have some early signs of the disease, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). That is pretty startling considering dental disease is something that can be avoided by caring for your pets' teeth throughout their lives, like we do for ourselves.

Brushing a cat's teeth, I admit, is a bit more challenging than brushing a dog's teeth, but if you start early in their lives (or as early as you can) and persist, you can save your pet considerable misery and yourself a lot of money and heartache. As with humans, bacteria from teeth and gums spread throughout the body, so decay just doesn't occur in a pet's mouth causing bone and tissue disease, but can spread throughout his body causing heart, kidney, and liver disease.

In addition to brushing regularly, you can supplement your pet's diet with tooth abrasion products like Greenies and brushing sticks (for dogs). I add Oxyfresh Pet Oral Hygeine Solution to my dog's and cat's water and give my senior dog Ark Naturals 'Brushless Toothpaste' every day, a crunchy treat that he finds challenging, but chews anyway!

PlaqueOff Powder For Dogs & Cats

ProDen PlaqueOff® Powder

ProDen PlaqueOff® Powder is another addition to the range of dental support products available for dogs and cats. PlaqueOff has three advantages: 1) it's tasteless, 2) it's simple to use (just mix it into your pet's food), and 3) it works. Specifically, PlaqueOff works to keep your pet's teeth and gums healthy - parents reporting less tartar, reduced gum disease, and some have reported reversal of stomatits, a very severe, painful irritation that occurs primarily in cats.

ProDen's Powder is made from a special Norwegian Seaweed that works with the saliva in your pet's mouth to break down bacterial biofilm that forms on the teeth and gums. Its tests have shown that it reduces bad breath by up to 63 percent after 12 weeks and reduces plaque by up to 35% after the first 8 weeks.

There is a version of PlaqueOff powder for dogs and cats and another just for cats. ProDen reports that results will be observed over a 2 to 8 week period, and that further benefits will be observed with continued use.

ProDen PlaqueOff Dental Bites

A newer product which will help support the PlaqueOff Powder supplement is ProDen's PlaqueOff Dental Bites, one for cats and small dogs, and another just for cats. Both offer the same support as the PlaqueOff Powder and can amplify the action of the Powder supplement. As long as you are giving your pets treats, you might as well give them ones that are good for their teeth and gums!

You don't ignore your dental health or that of your children; don't let your dogs and cats get the short shrift.

That's the buzz for today!
