Reporting on the finalists of the 2019 Editor's Choice Awards, I came across Emerald Pet, a company that makes pet treats, apparently very good pet treats because it has received eight specialty food recognition awards since 2011 - pretty impressive.
Though Emerald Pet focuses mainly on the brick and mortar pet store market ("pet specialty retailers"), I did find Emerald Pet pet treats on Amazon, so I decided to order three of several varieties offered. We have a canine trio of testers: my own dog and his playmates, one small and two medium-sized terriers. The three tried the Emerald Pet Purely Prime Tender Turkey Sausage Slices, the Emerald Pet Little Chewzzies, and two of the dogs tried the Emerald Pet Chicky Twizzies.
Nukkles (age 14), Trooper (age 10), and Kelly (age 2) are our three taste testers; they vote with their eyes (watch the whites) and tails and, of course, their mouths!
The image above is what all three of our test dogs look like when they get a whiff of Emerald Pet Purely Prime Tender Turkey Sausage Slices, and we know the great reviews on Amazon are not exaggerated. When you see the whites of their eyes, you know they love what's coming their way.
The turkey sausage is slightly spiced with applewood smoke and contains no artificial ingredients - just turkey, coconut glycerin, sea salt, dried orange pulp, vinegar, celery powder, tara gum, and rosemary extract. Other Turkey Sausage Slices add either pumpkin and whole chia seed, or carrots and quinoa to the basic recipe (see image below).
You can purchase the pure Turkey Sausage slices, the Turkey Sausage Slices with Pumpkin & Whole Chia Seed, and the Turkey Sausage Slices with Carrot & Quinoa.
I save the Turkey Sausage Slices for really special occasions, like inducing Nukkles to let me give him eye drops or when trying to get him to go outside in the rain - two of his least favorite activities. Trooper and Kelly get them more often, just for being their cute selves.... But there's no question, The Emerald Pet Purely Prime Tender Turkey Sausage Slices are their faves.
Very close behind are the Emerald Pet Little Chewzzies, chewy enough for some jaw action, but not too rough on older dogs. They give some action to the teeth and gums, though not as much as the Twizzies below. Available in Chicken, Salmon, Turducky, and Peanut Butter, our dogs tried the Peanut Butter and loved them. We are going to try them in all flavors now because they are super as training rewards (for Kelly!) because of their small size and breakability. They also make little fun game pieces for Nukkles who is deaf and sight-challenged, so I use these high-odor treats as hidden gems when we play. I throw them 8 -10 feet down a sidewalk and he has to find them. He loves this game!
The dogs will share bags of the other flavors in the future; this way they all get maximum variety in their treats. (Spoiled? Nah!) The chews are wheat free, low fat, and low calorie, but they are tasty!
Now, this is where some real chewing comes into play. A bit too hard for the old boy, but Trooper and Kelly found just enough challenge for the Twizzies to last for a few days (The dogs needed to be separated when they were given the Twizzies... jealousy!) They are made of real meat (or peanuts!); no rawhide or other hard body parts, just real turkey, duck, pork, chicken, or peanut butter. Both Trooper and Kelly gave both front paws up!
Emerald Pet Piggy Twizzies Ingredients
Dogs go crazy over chew toys sometimes and Twizzies are no exception. Although these chew toys are totally digestable, you should still make sure your dogs are supervised when you give them these treats. Make sure they don't bite off big pieces (take them away) and if dogs get too excited, distract them and remove the treat until the next day or two days later.
That's the buzz for today!
