COVID-19 Activity: Create Google Augmented Reality Wildlife

With all the Tiger King stories pertaining to the cruelty of animals flooding the airwave, you can turn all that cynicism into a positive with AR animals. Now you transition your quarantined boredom into a whole helluva lot of fun.

"Google's 3D Objects" is a tool to help you create virtual wildlife to join you during the COVID-19 'stay at home' lockdown. That's right, you can create virtual zoos right in the confines of your 'sheltered' home.

Google's AR Animals

Google announced last year at its I/O (Innovation in the Open) conference it was bringing AR Animals to their search site. Since then it's continually added new animals to its roster. Using Google search, you can bring a glimpse of the outdoors into your bedroom, living room, rec room or garage.

“With new AR features in Search...you can view and interact with 3D objects right from Search and place them directly into your own space, giving you a sense of scale and detail,” Google explained in 2019. “For example, it’s one thing to read that a great white shark can be 18 feet long. It’s another to see it up close in relation to the things around you. So when you search for select animals, you’ll get an option right in the Knowledge Panel to view them in 3D and AR.”

Sizing & Sound

One of the surprising characteristics of these AR animals is their size, appearing in their actual, exactly as you see them in real life. However if you'd like them smaller or larger you can shrink and enlarge as you see fit. You can input the bigger animals in your space or see smaller critters up close.

Life-like sound effects and animations bring these models to life as well, giving the sense they truly are in the room.

Types of Animals Available

Right now Google's set-up offers several dozen different AR animals to check-out:

COVID-19 Activity: Create Google Augmented Reality Wildlife

This list will provide you with more than enough species to create a sizable zoo.  If you're looking to keep yourself or your kids occupied, it’s as easy as opening Google Chrome or iPhone's Safari on your smartphone and searching for any of the AR animals listed above. You don’t even have to view them in AR, you can see each animal in 3D within your Google Search page.

Getting Started

For users of this technology, all you have to do is type in your animal [exp. "lion"] and search. Google explains. “In addition to info like the lifespan, diet, or speed" of a lion, you’ll also see a ‘view in 3D’ button.”

Tap that button and the 3D lion will appear. Users can then swipe around to get a complete view of the animal and move it to different surroundings onto your pics from your photo albums.

Requirements:

You will need an Android smartphone running Android 7.0 or higher, or an iPhone running iOS 11 or later.

So give it go. Invite nature into your family room to 'social distance' with you and your children. And if you have a dog or cat, get them involved as well.

. . . and if you upload to YouTube, send us your links below. We'd love to see your creativity with these AR Animals.
