Reality stars are a dime a dozen. However when they enhance their star-power with the power of the people, namely attracting millions of followers on social media — then you’re talking about them ascending to another realm of celebrity.

The Edwards Factor

However, if you’re Loni Edwards, the founder of The Dog Agency, you might want to avoid the egos of the Kardashians in exchange for the unconditional love of a dog, cat or monkey. In fact, according to Edwards, “pet influencer marketing is the biggest thing because pets tend to perform better on social media.”

"Everyone loves them, they make people happy, so then people like the brands as well because the content is making them happy," she added.

Pet Social Media Stars

As a star pet talent agent Edwards has a roster of unique clients include @realdiddykong, 2 monkeys with over a million Instagram followers; @hamlet_the_piggy, with over 300,000; and @itsmesesame, the rescue opossum with over 62,000; and @lionelthehog, who boasts over 130,000 followers.

As I’ve reported in the past, animal celebs like Lil Bub and Grumpy Cat can also make bank on their every post for a leading brand.

The #Paid Factor

Like Edwards, other pet agencies are ka-chinging their way to the bank with our social media stars. Bryan Gold, the CEO and co-founder of #paid  is one. In an interview PEOPLE he shared some valuable tips about how ordinary people with extraordinary pets can match up their animal family members with brands for authentic, money-making collaborations.

#paid has a network of 15,000 influencers in more than 100 countries — including some very successful pets like @tibbythecorgi (232,000 followers) and @toby_littledude (156,000 followers) — and partnerships with top brands including Airbnb, Coca-Cola, Ikea and Visa.

How to make your pets famous

To make your pet tweet-able or insta-famous, the L.A. Times recently asked the social media experts how to go about it. Here’s what they had to say:

  • Loni Edwards, the founder and managing partner of the Dog Agency, a New York City talent agency that represents Insta-famous animals. Edwards' dog Chloe (@chloetheminifrenchie) has more than 172,000 followers.
  • Colleen Wilson, the chief executive of Pets on Q, an L.A. talent management company that manages animals that star in commercials, do book deals and, yes, have massive Instagram followings. (Nala and her feline siblings are part of Pets on Q's talent menagerie.)
  • Varisiri Methachittiphan, who lives in Corona and owns a cat named Nala. @Nala_cat has 3.4 million Instagram followers. Running the accounts for Nala and her two other cats (@white_coffee_cat, who has 1.5 million followers, and @hello_luna_rose, who has more than 295,000) is Methachittiphan's full-time job.
  • Aiden Lee, who lives in L.A. and owns Geordi La Corgi, named for the character Geordi La Forge from "Star Trek: The Next Generation." @LAcorgi has more than 238,000 followers. When Lee isn't working with Geordi, she's an art director at an ad agency.
