Roaches are forever, it's been said, and with any luck your love will last a lifetime as well. The Bronx Zoo's popular Name-a-Roach program is a great way to show your SO just how much they mean to you on Valentine's Day.

Bronx Zoo Brings Back Name-a-Roach Program For Valentine's Day

The Bronx Zoo's “Name-a-Roach” program is back, just like that insectile infestation that returns time and time again. Mind you, no actual roaches are included in this imaginative though slightly icky Valentine's Day promotion. In a nutshell (and in return for a small monetary donation of just $15), the zoo is offering those romantically inclined an opportunity to name its giant Madagascar hissing cockroaches. If that alone won't warm the cockro-, er, cockles of his or her heart, each gift naming includes an official naming certificate that gets emailed to your loved one.

The $15 donation gift package is just the start, however. Other gift naming packages are available culminating with the ultimate $75 donation that includes a printed certificate, an all-new “Roach Brooch” pin, roach-pattern socks, and a box of delicious artisan chocolates... no roaches (or parts thereof) are harmed nor included in the making of the confectionery. Speaking of which, Madagascar hissing cockroaches are the world's largest roach species – adults can grow up to four inches in length! They do “hiss” as well, though only in self-defense to frighten potential predators... as if coming across a four-inch-long roach wasn't frightening enough!

“The Bronx Zoo's Name-A-Roach promotion is a light-hearted, fun way to reach out to someone on Valentine's Day to let them know that you are thinking about them,” explains John F. Calvelli, WCS Executive Vice President of Public Affairs. “Roses wither, chocolates melt but roaches are forever. Nothing lasts longer than a roach, so it could be sent as a symbolic gesture about how long your love will last or exactly the opposite. Some might say that love is like a roach – elusive, resilient, and sometimes very scary.” Calvelli has obviously given this topic a great deal of thought... maybe TOO much thought. One wonders what he's got planned for Halloween.

Besides being an amusingly offbeat way to share the joys of Valentine's Day, the Bronx Zoo's Name-A-Roach program gives welcome assistance to the WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society), whose mission is saving wildlife and wild places in New York and around the globe. Don't worry about the zoo running out of roaches, either. There are thousands of the alarmingly large insects in the zoo's Madagascar! exhibit, along with lemurs, crocodiles, and many other species native to the African island nation. By the way, Madagascar hissing cockroaches (like most species of cockroach) are not considered pests and are rarely found inside homes. Good to know!

Meanwhile, time is passing and you don't want to be caught up the creek without a cockroach when Valentine's Day rolls around. Visit the Bronx Zoo's website to place your order.
