A Boy, A Cat, A Bully, A Cleft Lip & 2 Different Color Eyes

Bullying in grade school can be a rite of passage. When the matter is addressed in a humane fashion, at times boys and girls can find ways to overcome the ridicule and physical fights. However, when bullying reaches a level where it actually breaks one's spirit, those are the challenging times that need the assistance of others. Today's blog is such a human interest story.

Heterochromia Iridum & Cleft Lip

Heterochromia iridum is when a portion of the iris has at least two colors. Complete heterochromia iridum, where the eyes are totally different colors is quite rare, existing in less than 1% of the population. That, in addition to a cleft lip, is exceptionally rare.

This GoFundMe video highlights the story of a 7yr old boy and 2yr old cat who were born with both conditions.

Madden & Moon: "Funny how a pet can make you feel less alone."

Madden Humphreys, from Owasso, Oklahoma, was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate, as well as heterochromia iridum. As he suffered these physical deformities, he also had to endure school bullying.

Fortunately his mother, Christina Humphreys experienced a healthy dose of synchronicity when she spotted a cat's resemblance to Madden on the Facebook Group, Mending Spirits Animal Rescue (a non-profit  group dedicated to matching adopted pets with families).

With the help of some friends, the Humphreys were determined to have Madden and this kitten meet.

“We drove from Oklahoma to Minnesota (over a weekend), to get the kitty Madden has named Moon,” Ms Humphreys wrote on Facebook.

"These handsome boys were both born with cleft lips and complete heterochromia iridum (different colored eyes), and we knew they were destined to be best friends. Funny how a pet can make you feel less alone," added Ms. Humphreys.

Going Forward

Madden and Moon now have an Instagram account to document their adventures together.

“Moon helps Madden realize that being born unique is an incredible thing, that he is magic,” Ms Madden posted.

“Everyone needs a friend, and everyone needs to feel understood. I’m so thankful Madden has Moon . . .these two handsome guys truly are a wonder.” Ms. Humphreys concluded.
