Bird-feeding is the most common way that humans throughout the world interact with birds, whether they live in urban, suburban, or rural areas. In 2016, 86 million people in the U.S. identified themselves as bird-watchers, more than one-quarter of our population
Home feeders, whether hanging from trees in your yard or from the eaves of your front porch, are one of the laziest, but rewarding, ways to watch birds. To get even closer to your neighborhood feathered friends, you can invite birds right up to your windows with their seeds of choice.
If you like to feed your birds up close and personal, bird feeders that attach to your windows or window sills are good ways to do it. The birds will delight you, your kids, and even your pets. Just make sure that you hang the feeders high enough so that other critters, such as squirrels, cannot reach them!
The first one, below, even brings birds into your house!
Wouldn't you love welcoming your neighborhood birds into your dining room, so you could all eat together? The BestNest Clearview Window Bird Feeder is one of the cleverest feeders I've seen. The bird feeder itself is 17.5 inches wide, 9 inches deep and 9 inches high, but the PVC panels extend the feeder to fit into a 30 - 36 inch wide window.
The feeder can hold up to 1.5 pounds of bird food. Depending on the birds you want to attract, you can place a variety of seeds, orange slices, meal worms, and even peanuts in the feeder, which can be filled from the top. Because you can fill the feeder from inside your home, you cannot use inclement weather as an excuse for not filling it!
Believe me, if that bird even felt the presence of the cat, he would not be there. The one-way mirror takes care of it. Some cat owners even say that bird-watching has been entertaining their cats for years with the One-Way Mirror Bird Feeder.
As for the birds, they have access to up to one pound of seeds or nuts or fruit, whatever you choose, and they only see their own reflection. The feeder hangs from the window by two suction cups placed on the outside of the window. If you don't live on the first floor or don't have a balcony to access the feeder from the outside, this particular feeder is likely not for you because the feeder must be filled from the outside of the window. This is an issue with most window feeders, except for the BestNest Clearview Window Bird Feeder above.
The Nature's Hangout Window Bird Feeder is the most popular and highest-rated window bird feeder on Amazon. Its sturdy acrylic body (11.8 x 5 x 4 Inches) is securely mounted with super-strong suction cups, and the manufacturer even includes extra cups for your convenience. The bottom portion of the feeder is removable for easy filling and it's nice and deep so the seeds won't fly away with the wind. Notice too that there's a comfy padded ledge for birds to perch as they eat. Nature's Hangout Window Bird Feeder holds 4 cups of bird seed and it must be accessible from the outside of your window in order to refill it.
The Nature Gear Window Bird Feeder is also a very popular, highly-rated window bird feeder. It is unique, however, in that it has an innovative system to remove moisture from the seed tray in inclement weather.
Also, as the feed tray slides out from the window side of the feeder, you can refill the feeder from the inside of your home if you are able to open the window that the feeder is mounted on. Another feature of the Nature Gear Window Bird Feeder is that it has a tall opening to welcome taller birds, such as blue jays (but not crows!).
Customers of the Nature Gear Window Bird Feeder are very happy with it, and prove it by sharing their personal photos of the birds they've attracted. The photos themselves are great publicity for this feeder!
Hummers need feeding too, and if you want them up close and personal, the Nectar DOTS Triple Window Hummingbird Feeder is perfect for window watching. Each DOT is removable so you can fill it inside and then place it in the Nectar holder for hummers to lap up. The DOTS each hold 1.25 ounces of nectar, which you can purchase or make yourself. (Recipe: 2 cups white sugar per 1/2 gallon boiling water. Let cool before serving.)
Nectar makes individual DOTS too, which are fun to place on various parts of your windows. Remember to wash your hummingbird feeders twice weekly; I use a bit of white vinegar and water with a small cleaning brush to clean the hummingbird feeders.
