Our pets enjoy getting new toys - and dogs, especially, love to tear open their wrappings. So, here are my picks of this year's best, including gifts for dogs, cats, pet birds, rabbits, ferrets, geckos and other small pets!
1. Best Dog Gifts: HuggleHounds® Candy Cane Tuffut Toy
All size dogs seem to love to hug their toys. And the HuggleHounds® Candy Cane Tuffut Toy is huggable and squeakable, to boot! Made of tough corduroy, this version of a candy cane is supposed to resist up to 100 pounds of tugging. It comes in large (12") and supersized (23") and the supersized has a squeaker that squeaks even when punctured!
2. Best Cat Gifts: The Natural Pet Company Cat Toys Collection in Gift Box
Natural sisal and feathers make up these adorable seven shapes your cat will love to chase. The little brown mouse toy on the left of the box is attached to a 16 inch wooden handle that you can control to the delight of your cat. The other six cat toys are free floating for tossing to your cat so that he can bat them around. This collection comes with a small bag of catnip; when it runs out, I recommend Sojos Certified Organic Catnip; it's the only one I buy, and it stays fresh a long time.
3. Best Dog Gifts: Tooth Cleaner Toys
These rubber nubby toys are so super for your dog's teeth and gums, but don't tell him.... You want him to think they are TOYS! You can still toss them around, play fetch, and with the small one, you can even play tug of war, but in the meantime your lucky dog will be massaging her gums. The Tooth Cleaners come in Small (3 inches long on an 11 inch rope), Medium (5 inches long), and Large (7.5 inches long). This well-made toy will LAST!
4. Best Cat Toys: Our Pet's Play-N-Squeak "Mouse Hunter" Cat Toy
The Play-N-Squeak Mouse Hunter may not look too exciting to you, but according to cat parents, it's a winner for their cats. The secret appears to be the squeak, a patented electronic mouse sound that to your cat is REAL! Once you toss the mouse or your cat bats it, the mouse emits a squeak and that's what keeps kitty batting it around. Cat owners say they have to hide the mouse from their cats. The Play-N-Squeak Mouse Hunter Cat Toy is good for your pocketbook too; at its current price, you can afford to gift every cat you know with one. Why not?
My cat loves his Play-N-Squeak, but If you are looking for a more sophisticated cat toy, I recommend one that I wrote up a few months ago - the Tower of Tracks. It's another winner for otherwise bored cats. (Read my review with video here.)
5. Best Medium & Large Bird Toy: Bonka Bird Toys 1750 Clacker Bird Toy
Whether you own a Cockatiel or an African Gray, the Bonka Clacker Bird Toy will make your noisy bird sooo noisy, you'll have to leave the house... but he'll be happy and well-occupied for a long time. The 'pots and pans' on the Clacker Toy are made of stainless steel, which provide reflections and noise for your pets. The plastic teething rings also serve to entertain your birds, as the feathered friends pick them up and drop them endlessly as they perch on their rings. The Clacker Bird Toy is 14 inches long and 6 inches high. Bird owners report continuous clacking noises in their homes, which is a good thing for their birds, but not so good for them.
6. Best Small To Medium Bird Toy: Rusee Rope Bungee Bird Toy
The Rusee Rope Bungee Bird Toy can be set up inside or outside of the cage, depending on the kind of birds you have and how much freedom they have. The Rope Bungee is malleable so you can set a path for it to follow and then change it periodically. The rope shape is good for your birds as it challenges to fully exercise his claws. Also a rope encourages your bird to move around, which he needs, especially if he is caged. Birds also love to rub their beaks on rope, as well as peck and pick at it.
Here is an interesting arrangement of the Rusee Rope Bungee Bird Toy in a small bird (perhaps canary) cage.
7. Best Rabbit Toy: The Tree Rabbit Toy
If you want to buy your bunny a SAFE, chewable, rabbit toy, the The Tree Rabbit Toy is it! Happy Rabbit Toys has been making toys for bunnies right here in the U.S. for decades and its toys are celebrated for being bunny fun and bunny friendly. The trees are hand-carved local woods and natural dyes are used to color them. Sisal cords hold the "branches" together. Bunnies will have fun gnawing on the wood branches and pulling apart the sisal, so don't expect it to look like new for very long. Here's a photo of two rabbits attacking a new Tree Rabbit Toy.
8. Best Puzzle Toy For Rabbits & Other Small Pets: Trixie Snack Board Logic Toy for Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, and Other Small Pets
I'm so happy to see that there are not only puzzles for dogs and puzzles for cats, but puzzles for our smaller pets - they need some mental stimulation too! From rabbit, guinea pig, and degus owners come rave reviews that say that their little guys love this puzzle toy. Even after pets get the hang of the Trixie Snack Board Logic Toy, pet parents report their pets still love the toy - perhaps because they're getting some good treats! You can cut up your pet's favorite fruits, veggies, or give them their favorite packaged snacks. Trixie makes great puzzles for dogs and cats too!
9. Best Toy For Ferrets: MyFerret Ferret Hammock
This charming Ferret Hammock is perfect for your living room or for your ferret's cage. There's nothing a ferret likes to do more than play on his back in a hammock. The MyFerret Ferret Hammock comes in small (8.1 x 5.5 x 1.6 inches) and large (9.1 x 7.9 x 1.8 inches) and is suitable for ferrets and other small animals - even kittens and small cats! It comes in beige, blue, pink and leopard!
I love the idea of the whole family sitting around watching TV with its pet ferret.
Okay, where's the ferret? MyFerret Ferret Hammock
10. Best Toy For Geckos: Exo Terra Gecko Cave for Reptiles
This gecko is singing because he has a place to hide. Geckos and other reptiles need places to hide or they can become stressed, exhibiting behaviors that include nervousness and withdrawal from interaction and eating. The Exo Terra Gecko Cave is a welcome beauty for tropical terrariums and it comes in three sizes with minimal price differences among them, so if you have more than one gecko (either Leopard Geckos or Fat Tail Geckos), you may want to try a medium or large cave for them to share. But don't buy a size you don't need, as a cave needs to feel cozy to your gecko. The small size is 6.5 x 7 x 3.5 inches and has a hole that is 1.5” wide and 0.8” high. The medium Cave is 5 x 6 x 3.7 inches with a hole size of 1.7” wide and 1” high. The large Gecko Cave is 6.5 x 8.5 x 4.4 inches with a hole size of 2.7” wide and 1.4” high.
The Exo Terra Gecko Cave will be a welcome addition to your Gecko's home and even if he doesn't know it's a holiday, it will be totally welcomed!
Hope you enjoy these ideas for holiday gifts and that you, your human, and your pet families celebrate the happiest, healthiest of holidays!
That's the buzz for today!
