While giant pandas in captivity have a difficult time procreating . . . it appears of recent date, this much-loved species is no longer being threatened by extinction. As of late 2016, this lovable creature was downgraded from ‘Endangered’ to ‘Vulnerable’ on the global list of species at risk.

The goal is 12,000 species. The ’Photo Ark’ navigator and animal photographer is Joel Sartore. The mission is to document every captive animal species in the world using studio lighting and black-and-white backgrounds. So far, he’s traveled to 40 countries and has accomplished more than half of his target.

While President Trump has shown a proclivity for signing ‘executive orders’ to kickstart his first year in office, this week there was some confusion if animals would also be subject to his stricter immigration policies as well? Coupled with those concerns, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE] agency have been conducting raids to round up and arrest undocumented immigrants in California and several other border states. With all this disruption and unprecedented activity, might our pandas come under threat of deportation?

The birth of a giant panda has been known to cause heightened excitement the world over —  hence the newly-minted term: "pandamonium." As an endangered species, the panda population has declined due to habitat fragmentation and poaching in the wild, as well as experiencing low birth rate and high infant fatalities in captivity.
