Most recently I documented research in a blog post pertaining to the ‘sixth mass extinction,’ which is shockingly taking place as we speak. While under-reported, the current indicators point to several species diminishing as much as 67 percent by the year 2020. In light of those devastating findings, it’s encouraging to learn about efforts to save and reverse the extinction process of one mammal you may never have been aware of — namely, the Pacific fisher.

Wisconsin hunter Brian Powers is no Elmer Fudd. Even though he was out hunting in deer season he set aside such thoughts when he saw a very young buck wearing an orange "scarf." The surprises didn't end there. The deer approached him and clearly asked to be pet. As he kindly obliged in showing the little guy some affection he realized that this was no completely wild deer.

At this dark time of year people don't usually think of braving the cold to go to the zoo -- especially at night. During the month of December zoos all over North America change this up by creating month-long events called Zoo Lights or Wild Lights. They decorate their grounds with millions of twinkle lights and displays of animals made of lights right alongside the live animals that live there.

Stray cats and dogs are a fairly (and sadly) common thing.  So that rarely makes news. However, on November 1st a stray, injured alpaca came to the attention of the Boulder County Sheriff's Department in Colorado. The animal was found on Indian Lookout Road in the town of Lyons. She has been named LC for having been found in Lyons Crest and is now recuperating at a horse rescue in Longmont.
