According to Stanford

According to Stanford University's official website (gostanford.com), Stanford does not have a mascot.  But I'm aware of Oakie and have seen him on other websites.  My understanding is that he is somehow a part of the Stanford University Marching Band, which is, in my opinion, one of the finest college marching bands, anywhere.  I've had the pleasure of seeing the Stanford Band perform at a couple of football halftime programs and thoroughly enjoyed it every time.[img_assist|nid=58537|title=Image|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=120|height=80]

Having said that, maybe you can provide me with a little information about Oakie.  His leaves are definitely not oak leaves, they're maple.  And, as I understand it, The Tree, from which this whole tradition sprang is a redwood in Palo Alto.   What gives?
