Uber and Austin Pets Alive Team Up for Puppy Delivery: Pet adoptionsUber and Austin Pets Alive Team Up for Puppy Delivery: Pet adoptions

When most people think of Uber they think of transportation to and fro with the popular ride sharing service. Delivering people to their destinations much like a taxicab, you wouldn’t necessarily associate them with pets. Well, that’s not exactly true. That’s because last Friday, on November 20, Uber teamed up with Austin Pets Alive to deliver puppies to offices throughout Texas's music capital for a rare treat to workers. Instead of taking a coffee break or slipping out for lunch, office drones got to cuddle with playful pups.

Puppy Deliveries

It’s all part of a program to encourage adoptions and ease stress at the same time. Animals are well known for their emotional and physical benefits when interacting with people. They can lower blood pressure, ease stress and bring on feelings often associated with chocolate by raising endorphins. The on-demand event brought awareness to the importance of animal rescues and helped the happy recipients of the unexpected treat chill out and relax all in the name of a good cause.

Animal Rescues

Animal shelters are overflowing with unwanted pets. Sadly, fewer of them get placed than those that don’t, especially hard-to-place pets like older dogs and cats. With the holidays fast approaching, there will unfortunately be a glut of pets being sent to animal shelters and pounds everywhere come late winter, early spring. That’s because puppies and kittens are often given as gifts during the Christmas season with little thought as to the wisdom behind the gift.

Pets Alive

Businesses that decided to take part in the partnership between Uber and Austin Pets Alive merely needed to open their Uber app and make a reservation for a puppy appearance delivered straight to their doors by Uber drivers. The cost of this wonderful work distraction was $30 for 15 minutes of cuddle time, and employees loved it. In January of 2015, Uber gave the idea a test drive, and the pilot program was so successful they decided to do it again. Originally, 10 different cities took part in the cross promotion for Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl.

Animal Shelters

This year, as in every year, animal shelters everywhere are hoping that families that are intent on getting a child a pet for Christmas will consider adopting from them or other animal rescue venues rather than supporting puppy mills. Of course they don’t want you to get a pet without strongly considering all of the work and responsibility that comes with pet ownership. Otherwise, these same pets will just end up right back where they started. This is devastating to an animal that is returned time and again.

Responsible Pet Ownership

Giving an unwanted pet a forever home is one of the kindest gifts you can give. While you may want to give that gift, all the good intention in the world are meaningless if you can’t really keep an animal for the duration of its natural life. That’s why it’s strongly recommended that you think long and hard before adopting a dog or cat before you actually do it.

So, if you’re thinking about adopting an animal, you may want to check them out before you take the proverbial plunge. If you do, chances are you’ll be getting a forever pet rather than a pet unsuitable for your particular situation. Remember, animals have feelings, too, so adopt wisely!
