Valentine’s Day is next month, and it’s a way to show the loved ones in your life just how much you care. If you’re a pet owner, then you can show your extended family members they mean the world to you, too. So, what can you do to say “I love you” to the four-legged friends in your life? Well, certainly not the traditional way with chocolates. As most pet owners know, chocolate is a big no-no when it comes to dogs and cats. But there are plenty of other ways you can show your love.

Pet Massages

One of the ways humans show their appreciation for one another on special occasions is with a spa treatment that includes a relaxing massage. Pets can benefit from massages as well. That’s right, especially pets with skin conditions or pets suffering from arthritis pain. All you have to do is get yourself a 1/2 cup of olive oil and warm it up and then slowly massage it into your pet’s coat and arthritic joints. It’s soothing and relaxing while giving their coat a good conditioning.

Pet Accessories

They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but your pet might enjoy a new rhinestone studded collar that tells the world he or she’s mommy’s best boy or girl. There are some really great animal/pet accessory sites out there now that carry all the latest bling that even if your pet doesn’t fully appreciate, you and your friends surely will. You can also find some super fun pet clothes adorned with hearts and bows to signify the day you’re acknowledging with your pet in mind. Once you’ve got them all dolled up, don’t forget the prerequisite photo op for such occasions.

Pet Treats

Specialized bakeries for pets create the most amazing designer doggy and kitty treats these days. All you have to do is perform a search with the keywords “pet bakeries” or “pet bakeries near me” and the number of hits you get will floor you. They make homemade treats like pies, cakes, cookies, biscuits and gourmet dog food all with your pet’s health in mind. Most are made with all natural ingredients that include things like carob, peanut butter and yogurt on the fancier end, and many even carry holistic foods and supplements for your dogs and cats to enjoy.

 Grooming Sessions

Maybe you’ve been putting off having your pet groomed and it’s way past due. Now’s your chance to get your little ragamuffin pampered professionally with a grooming that includes the works. A good groomer will not only bathe your pet, but they’ll sort out that tangled hair don’t and trim the tufts that grow out of the bottom of their paws as well as clean their ears and even express their anal glands, if need be. If you really want to go all out, you can even get their nails painted while they’re there. To top it all off, they’ll more than likely send your pet home with a fancy new bandana sported around their neck that may even be decked out with hearts.

Dog’s Day Out

What better way to say “you’re my everything” to your canine companion than a day out with mom or dad? Dogs love nothing more than to spend time with you. Being near to their owners gives them more happiness than just about anything else in the world. With that in mind, take your buddy to a nearby dog park or dog-friendly beach for a day out with a little exercise thrown in. Play fetch with them or any other game that they really enjoy. Another idea is to take them with you to the nearest pet store that allows animals inside and let them pick out their own toys or treats.

The Cat’s Meow

For feline friends, consider picking up some organic catnip and maybe a new toy to put it in. Another thing most cats enjoy are those furry little mice with the suede tails and the tiny rattlers inside to bat about the house. Rub some catnip on them and you’ll find your cats will get hours of enjoyment out of it. They get a kick out of anything that reminds them of their big cat origins that allow their primal instincts to kick in. Keeping them entertained can also be as simple as purchasing one of those bat-a-birds on a piece of thin, stretchy elastic that springs back when cats try and pin them down or pull on them.
