Happy Santa Lucia's Day to all of my fellow Scandinavians. This day once
fell directly on the Winter Solstice before the reformation of the
calendar in the 16th century. The holiday is about the eternal struggle
between darkness and light. A white gown with a crown of candles is a
traditional costume used in the celebration.

Santa Lucia is the only Scandinavian saint. She was killed by the Romans for her religious beliefs. For Swedes and Norwegians the day, December 13, is the official start to the Christmas season. Apparently you can now get a wreath for your dog or cat to wear so that you can celebrate like you are in the old country -- well, sort off.
