For 40 years now 79-year-old Werner Freund has been the leader of the
pack -- a wolf pack that is. At his sanctuary in Merzig, Germany he has
hand raised wolf pups from six different packs around the world. The

sanctuary takes in wolves from zoos and animal parks.
To maintain his dominance of the canine crew Freund takes his role as
alpha male seriously.
Freund uses natural wolf behavior to make sure that he is always the big dog at the wolf park. When he brings a deer carcass into the enclosure to feed the wolves he eats first while the salivating also-rans have to wait their turn. It is one way that he maintains the respect of the pack. When they aren't feeding the animals interact playfully and lovingly with Freund, currying the favor of the alpha male. The wolves will even lick his mouth in an act of subservience.
The former German paratrooper established the sanctuary in 1972. In the 25-acre park he has raised more than 70 wolves. Right now he is caring for 29 of the animals. He is so familiar with them and them with him that he astounds visitors to the park by feeding them from his mouth.
The wolves living in the sanctuary represent the European, Siberian, Canadian, Artic, and Mongolian regions of the world
When it comes to wolves it isn't surprising that Freund mean "friend" in German.
