Joey the macaque was going to temporarily stay at an animal clinic while his owner was away, but he made a daring, yet brief escape from his cage…
The monkey’s owner placed Joey in the care of Conway, Arkansas' Chestnut Animal Clinic on Tuesday, as the he was out of town. Being the clever primate that he is, Joey had managed to open the door to his cage, as well as the back door of the clinic. Joey made his grand escape at about 7:30pm, and roamed the mean streets of Conway for about two minutes before police discovered the 30lb monkey.
As police corralled Joey into a parking lot near a bank, he approached an officer with a similar build as Joey’s owner and casually climbed up his arm to perch on his shoulder. Officer Edgmon walked back to the Chestnut Animal Clinic with Joey in tow until they got to the door. Joey jumped down and wouldn’t reenter the building until the officer went inside first. Unfortunately, Mr. Edgemon received a marginal bite on his hand while helping to place Joey back into his cage, but the agitated monkey was quickly calmed after receiving some medical tranquilizers.
After Joey unlatched his cage, he wandered around the office to play with the clinic’s “mascot” orange cat and to throw around some office supplies, but he triggered an alarm in the process. The alarm probably startled poor Joey, so he naturally looked to get away from the noise. Since his recovery, Joey has been placed in a heavy-duty, padlocked enclosure to ensure that he stays put during his visit and his owner was notified about his wild adventure.
