The Japanese are known for being absolutely crazy about cats. From what
my cat tells me, it is proof of the level of highly evolved wisdom the Japanese possess. I am not going to argue with her, especially not after
seeing the most adorable marshmallows in the world -- in the adorable
shape of a kitty. And -- believe it or not -- it is NOT Hello Kitty.
From the nation that did provide us with the iconic Hello Kitty, as well as cat cafes, and has its own Cat Island, comes a specialty confectioner, Yawahada, that creates the most amazing marshmallows in the shapes of cats and cat paws. They are designed to set afloat in your favorite hot beverage, from coffee and tea, to cocoa and lattes.
They may have been created for hot drinks, but I can imagine using them in so many ways -- not the least of which is on a stick at a campfire, though that may be a bit creepy. They would make great decorations for cakes and cupcakes. I am sure that there are cat-loving foodies out there who have more ideas than I can come up with!
Let's face it -- these melt-able marshmallows put Peeps to shame. They are cuter and look more like a cat than the Peeps look like chicks or bunnies. Not that I would try to dissuade anyone of their Peeps addiction -- I have had many a Peeps sugar rush over yearsl.. I am sure that they melt well in cocoa too.
They are available in vanilla and chocolate. Sadly, they are currently only available in Japan. The website says that they are working on international shipping options. I have a feeling that if they can resolve this issue or create an American joint venture their business would skyrocket.
Each of these little kitties is handmade in a time-consuming process. These sweet felines are specifically deigned to stay afloat and upright during the melting process. Who wants a cute kitty marshmallow that doesn't keep you company?
A marshmallow cat in hot cocoa would be a great way to surprise a child for a special event, or to cheer a sick child. Until they make it to this side of the Pacific, hang on to those leftover Peeps to fill in for now. If you are headed to Japan and want some of these cute kitties you can order on their website and have them to the address where you will be staying.
