5 Tips To Keep Your Dog Cool In The Car

Traveling with your dog can be a lot of fun. But what happens if your air conditioner breaks, or you get stuck in a traffic jam? Your car could potentially get too hot of for your dog.

Don't Leave Your Dog In The Car

If at all possible, never leave your dog in a parked car. Even if you're parked in the shade, the heat escalates very quickly inside the car and can become deadly in ten minutes or less. If you're traveling, or in a situation where it can't be helped, here are some tips you can follow to keep your dog cool.

Keeping Your Dog Cool

If you're traveling with your dog, follow these tips to keep him cool.

1. Don't Leave Your Dog Unattended

Leaving your dog alone in a car on hot weather days can be extremely dangerous. If you can't take your dog with you, make sure that someone stays in the car with your dog to make sure the temperature stays cool and that the dog doesn't start overheating. If possible, have them stand outside the car with the dog on a leash. Never leave your dog alone in a parked car.

2. Keep Windows Open And Air Conditioning On

It's important to keep the car cold and ventilated to avoid the greenhouse effect that causes the car to heat up. Let the dog sit next to an open window and/or in front of the air conditioner vent so he can stay nice and cool. Remember that if the car feels warm to you, your dog is probably extremely uncomfortable.

3. Plenty Of Cold Water

Keeping your dog hydrated is an important part of keeping him cool. Make sure you have a cool water bottle and a bowl at all times for him to drink from. If you don't mind having a wet dog in your car, he could also greatly benefit from an occasional spritz of water.

4. Install Fans

The right fan can do wonders to circulate air throughout a car and help keep your dog cool. Be sure to choose a long-lasting battery-powered fan for the best results. The Ryobi Fan is worth trying for a long-lasting fan that's easy to install in a car.

5. Cooling Pads

If your dog is staying in the back of the car, and you're on a trip (or have to be in the car for a lengthy amount of time), a cooling pad will do wonders to help your dog stay cool. Cooling pads can be found at most pet stores, or can easily be purchased online. PlayaPup Chiller offers a cooling mat that's pressure activated, and doesn't require batteries.

With these tips, you should have an easier time keeping your dog cool during car trips. Be sure to never leave your dog alone in the car, and have fun!
