If you are looking for specific instructions on making your own cat door, it will really depend on what you want to do. You will need some basic tools including a power drill and jigsaw wood cutter.  I liked this video which gives you a good general idea of what will be involved with creating or installing a cat door.

The truth is, cats should be kept indoors at all times and unless there are areas inside the home to which kitty access is occasionally denied, then cat doors are not needed.

That's crazy!!! It's unhealthy and unnatural for cats never to be permitted outdoors to run, climb and exercise in the fresh air. Compare my athletic healthy happy cats to my aunts bored, neurotic overweight cats, one with diabetes.

I think the best bet is to build a contained area for your cats. I do agree that cats do need to exercise and get fresh air like the humans. Some very cool ideas for doors here. If only I was crafty.
