Here I thought that Lay's was favoring us with an odd assortment of flavors on potato chips when they came out with Biscuits and Gravy chips or Cappuccino chips,. However, England has us beat all the way around with some of their flavors of chips, or "crisps" as they call them. Years ago a company called Hedgehog Foods Ltd. thought it would be a great joke to create Hedgehog Flavoured Crisps.

Now no hedgehogs were harmed in the making of these crisps. In fact they were actually flavored with pork fat. To everyone's surprise the crisps were a huge success with the public. Not everyone was all that happy though and Hedgehog Foods soon found themselves in court. They were up against the Office of Fair Trading for false advertising just because there were no actual hedgehogs in the crisps. Picky, picky, picky.

Things took a rather strange turn to get the lawsuit settled. A representative for Hedgehog Foods went out and talked with gypsies who actually did eat the occasional hedgehog. He was on the trail to find out what roast hedgehog really tasted like. After that he commissioned a company that researched flavors to come up with a recipe as close to the real thing as possible. With this change in the recipe and the labeling from 'Flavoured Crisps" to "Flavour Crisps" and the whole thing went away. In case you're wondering this all happened back in the early 80s.

After I found out all about this I went on a short poke around the internet and found that the U.K. has also produced such tasty crisps as Cajun Squirrel and Ranch Raccoon from a company called Walkers. And they think Americans are weird. Well, we are, which is why we get such a chuckle out of these strange animal foods.

So what weird flavor would I make up that includes an animal? How about Lemming Lime Chips?
