Although it's more expedient to use throw-away pee pads, landfills are not really begging for them. But now there are dozens of washable pee pads to choose from and it seems like you can't go wrong with them if used properly.
According to Amazon's thousands of washable dog pee pad buyers, most of those offered for sale are great! Nevertheless, there are some things that you should consider when shopping for them...
1. Pee Pad Size
The size of your dog or dogs matters, as does the size of the area where you want to place the pad. The pad needs a permanent spot and it should be somewhere near where your dog generally hangs out when you are not home. Unlike disposable pee pads, washable pee pads come in all sizes and shapes from small to large and round to square to rectangle. Some washable pee pads are large enough to cover all the floor under a large dog pen, especially helpful for a puppy or older dog who is contained for much of the day.
If your dog has little leaks and likes to hang out on your bed, you can even place a large pee pad, like the KOOLTAIL 72" on top of your bed spread. Another great use of a large pee pad is for whelping!
KOOLTAIL Washable Pee Pads actually come in many sizes: 36" x 41", 48" x 60", and 72" x 72" (shown above). The smaller sizes also come in light blue.
Buy two so you can rotate one while washing the other!
2. Pee Pad Absorbency
Of course you don't want pee slipping through the pee pad onto your floor or your mattress. So before you purchase a washable pee pad make sure it has multiple layers of absorbent material. Kooltail, above, meets those qualitifications, as do many others available on Amazon. Best-seller Pet Parents Pawtect Pads Washable Dog Pee Pads are highly absorbent pads that come in round and rectangular shapes in different sizes.
Each package has two Pawtect Pads so you will always have a clean pad available while you are washing the other. You should wash them on gentle and hang dry to lengthen their useful lives.
3. Pee Pad Comfort
You may not think that a pee pad should necessarily be comfortable for your dogs, but because these washable pee pads are made with soft materials and are a bit thick (thicker than paper) they will lie on them, especially if they are placed in or near their crates. If you think this will be the case, you should look for a relatively thick pad like the quilted EZwhelp Washable, Reusable Pee Pad.
The EZwhelp is nice and thick for comfort and for absorbtion. It comes in seven sizes (from 17" x 20" to 72" x 72") and is so absorbant you might want to buy a few for other uses like car seat and furniture protection. The EZwhelp has four layers. The top layer is a fast-absorbing brushed polyester (cozy!) which delivers moisture to a super absorbent layer beneath. The third layer protects the bottom layer from getting wet, and the bottom layer keeps the pad from slipping on the floor.
The EZwhelp is sold as a single unit. I suggest you purchase at least two so you can always have one clean and ready for your dog.
Keep size, absorbancy, and comfort in mind when purchasing washable pee pads. Most of the pads can also be used under your own bedsheets or your child's!
That's the buzz for today!
