An abandoned cat rescued in northeast England sports three ears, can hear the sound of a can-opener from a half-mile away.

'Ear now, wot's all this then?

A three-eared cat nicknamed "Captain Kirk" due to his "final front-ear" has thrust the Feline Care Cat Rescue in East Harling, Norfolk, UK into the limelight. It's not every day a three-eared cat turns up, after all! Manager Molly Farrar told the BBC the center's veterinarian had never encountered an extra-eared cat in his 30 years of practice.

Fascinating...

"We see plenty of cats with no tails, some tails, only a little bit of tail missing, cats with three legs, one eye, cats with all kinds of disabilities, but this is something quite special," stated Ms Farrad. According to the Eastern Daily Press, the cat – who center staff estimate is between four and eight years of age – was formally named "Brian" after the owner of the garage where he was found.

Mysteries of sight and sound

"We have had suggestions of Spock or Captain Kirk because he's got a left ear, a right ear and a final front-ear," explained Ms Farrar. Feline Care Cat Rescue is located close to an industrial estate, and it is thought he may have been abandoned there or inadvertently hitchhiked on the back of a truck.

Is there an echo in here?

What lies ahead for Brian... will he be going where no cat has gone before? Not likely: according to Ms Farrar, if Brian's owner can't be found, he will be re-homed with a more caring new owner.
