A neglected Persian cat weighed down by five pounds of filthy matted fur has a new lease on life thanks to some caring folks who rescued it, bathed it, and gave it a badly needed trimming.
Pets are dependent on their owners and when said owners face difficulties in their daily lives, their pets suffer as well. Such was the case of Sinbad, a Persian cat owned by an elderly man from Chicago.
As the man's mental health deteriorated over the years, Sinbad found himself relegated to the basement where his un-brushed fur grew... and grew... and grew to the point where neither Sinbad nor his owner could deal with it.
When a city utility worker visited the man's house to perform repairs and maintenance, he came across a shocking sight: Sinbad's fur had grown so profuse and matted, the poor feline could barely move!
Instead of ignoring Sinbad's plight, the utility worker reported the situation to The Anti-Cruelty Society, who arranged for a humane investigation team to visit the gentleman and assess Sinbad's situation.
“He was an elderly man whose mental health was failing and he couldn't care for the cat,” explained Colette Bradley, PR manager for The Anti-Cruelty Society. “Our humane investigators asked him if he would be willing to relinquish the cat into our care and he agreed.”
At the shelter, vets found Sinbad to be in relatively good health, all things considered. Two rounds of hair-cutting and a warm, gentle bath finally freed a slimmer, friskier and no doubt happier Sinbad from his imprisoning cocoon of filthy, dirt-encrusted fur.
As Sinbad was now without an owner of a home, shelter employee Elliott Serrano (above) volunteered to care for him over the holidays. Sinbad not only made a rapid recovery under Serrano's care, both human and feline forged a bond of mutual affection that resulted in Serrano formally adopting Sinbad.
Sinbad's fortuitous rescue and incredible transformation moved more than just those directly involved: mass media reports have garnered Sinbad a legion of fans and admirers. These days Sinbad likes to show off his renewed fur, an abundance of fashionable outfits, and his obvious pleasure in his new life. (via The Anti-Cruelty Society/Facebook)
