The iconic Iditarod Sled Dog Race begins today the the dogs are ready to howl, er, um, haul. It is their version of the Olympics.
These dogs are tough. They run between 975 and 998 miles over 8-15 days at temperatures that can reach 100 degrees below zero. The difference in distance is because there are two routes. The northern used in even numbered years is 975 miles.
