While President Trump was celebrating the first anniversary of his inauguration on January 20th, penguins at the Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland celebrated Penguin Awareness Day with their nifty new bubble machine. Where would you rather be?
As entertainment and stimulation go, the bubble-palooza couldn't be beat – and that goes for the penguins AND their human fans. “The bubble machine was generously gifted through the Amazon wish list set up for our animals,” explained Lorna Moffat, penguin keeper at the RZSS Edinburgh Zoo.
“Our colony of over 130 birds enjoy lots of different types of enrichment, from their water slide to their floating platforms, but the bubble machine is always a firm favorite so getting a new one is fantastic.”
While penguins in the wild see bubbles day in and day out, they're mostly underwater and not floating lazily through the air – the bubbles, that is, not the penguins. “All three of our penguin species loved playing with the bubbles,” added Moffat, “especially our youngest rockhopper chick who was taking part for the first time.”
RZSS Edinburgh Zoo has featured a penguin exhibit since it opened in 1913 and today boasts the largest outdoor penguin pool in Europe. Fun and games aside, penguins are serious business and the RZSS takes great interest in their conservation, both at the zoo and in the wild. (via Edinburgh Evening News)
