The Newport Oregon Police Department recycled an old photo of a treed cat clutching what appears to be a miniatue automatic rifle, proving once again that old cat memes still check out.
We had to check to be sure the date wasn't April 1st (it was the 25th) when a cropped version of the startling photo above was shared at the Newport Oregon Police Department's Facebook page. “Reports of an armed cat this morning were unfounded,” read the accompanying caption. “The feline was contacted by our canine and was determined to be in possession of a non-lethal branch. The cat was given a verbal warning for posing with what could be mistaken as an assault rifle while wearing poor camouflage attire.”
When contacted by a reporter from OregonLive, Kit O'Carra (who runs the Newport Police Facebook page) replied by email that she had discovered the photo online and there was no indication the scene was somewhere in Newport – residents are surely sighing in relief. “The photo has been circulating the Internet and Facebook since last July, perhaps even earlier,” admitted O'Carra. “I wrote the post putting our spin on it and having a little fun with it.” All's well that ends well... let's just hope Sean Spicer doesn't read The Oregonian.
