While it may not be all that common, there are businesses that adopt cats. What is far more uncommon is when the business "hires" said cat to keep some bad-tempered people from complaining about the presence of a sweet little blue-eyed Siamese-mix kitten. The Order of Attorneys of Brazil (OAB, the equivalent of the American Bar Association) responded to complaints by making the puss an official employee.
This adorable little boy was lost and stray during a huge rain storm last February. He sought shelter in the OAB offices and liked it so much that he decided to stay. Why not? He was fed, protected, and had a comfy box to sleep in. Since not everyone likes cats, some people were not at all thrilled with his choice and began to file complaints about his presence. Perhaps this was due, in part, to the fact that he would hang around the reception desk to waylay and welcome all newcomers. Since he was just a kitten some said that they were concerned that he might get stepped on.
He was named Leon and to help quiet the complaints about him he was made an official employee of the firm. A short time later he was made an honorary attorney. Now he is known as Dr. Leon Advogato, the Lawyer Cat. He even wears his own little employee badge on his collar, just in case anyone doubts his official employee status.
The good news is that Dr. Leon may be getting his own office as the other employees of the OAB are working on the papers to create an animal rights institute. It will be called Instituto Dr. Leon. Since the OAB cannot house all of the animals in need they will be funding other animal non-profits in the area.
These days even Leon's detractors love him and take the time to have fun with him. For those who are wondering, Leon has been neutered so that history won't repeat itself with any kitten of his. For the most part he is a healthy, happy cat, but there is some kind of trouble with his vocal cords that vets believe was caused by his suffering as a kitten, so he hardly ever meows. But who needs to meow when you have so many people loving you and taking care of you?
Naturally Leon loves to play with his toys. He also is pure cat and shares an office with the president of the OAB. His favorite spot in the entire firm is on President Auriney's office sofa. While this may make him seen elite, he still eats regular cat food like any other cat. You can follow Dr. Leon on Instagram.
When I was in my 20s I worked as a bookkeeper at an office supply store where we had a company cat -- a sweet and beautiful white long-haired cat named Charlie. One of his favorite places to nap was on my chair. He once destroyed the arm of a chair in the furniture department. When we explained to the manufacturer why we needed to have the chair repaired they were so delighted that they replaced the chair's arm for free.
In 2007 the Manchester Airport in Manchester, England, found that there was a stray cat hanging out on the grounds. The cat was adopted and cared for by the entire staff. For more information on Olly, click here.
