It's not everyday that you see a cow that towers over its herd at 6 feet 4 inches tall. Knickers, a steer in Queensland, Australia, is just that. He stands head and haunches over his friends and family. To put that in perspective, former basketball player Michael Jordan is 6 feet 6 inches tall. I don't know how he is in a drive for the hoop, but for a cow he's apparently got game.

Another way to put this in perspective is that the aurochs, an giant kind of extinct cattle with a bad attitude, generally only topped out at about 5 feet 3 inches for a steer. Hitler spent a great deal of Nazi Germany's resources trying to recreate the breed. This dude, a seven-year-old Holstein-Freisian, would have had him drooling. The rest of his herd averages about 4 feet 10 inches tall. Another point to keep things in perspective is that cattle are measured from the bottom of the hoof to the top of the shoulder. Add in the head and Knickers is even taller than reported. Holy cow!

When he first came to live on Geoff Pearson's farm he became fast friends with a Brahma bull named Bra, so it just seemed natural to name him Knickers. You know, bra and knickers. It's a really bad pun, but I love bad puns. While he may be Australia's largest bovine, he won't make the Guinness Book of World Records. That honor still remains with an ox in Italy who was 6 feet 7 inches tall.

The big benefit of Knickers being this size is that it saved he from being made into approximately 4,000 hamburgers. He is just too big for the usual processing methods.

While he has retired, make that semi-retired, to Pearson's farm, he earns his keep leading around the other cows. This is because Knickers is apparently popular with the ladies. Wwhen he starts to move they follow him. He's the BMOP -- Big Moo On Pasture.

There has been no word yet on any Hindus stopping by to worship, but if I were a Hindu I think I might make the pilgrimage.
