Fowl play in Ossining, New York was in the cards for a “heroic” local police officer who arrived at the scene of a shed fire and rescued a wayward chicken.
Ossining, New York – home of the notorious Sing Sing maximum-security prison – may have found a new (and unlikely) claim to fame. Give the laurels to Officer Patrick McGovern of New York's Ossining Police Department, who was dispatched to the scene of a burning shed on a residential property.
We'd like to think McGovern called out to determine if anyone was home and heard a frightened voice reply “Nobody here but us chickens!” OK, that probably did NOT happen but there WAS at least one chicken present... and if not for Officer McGovern's quick and effective action, its goose would have been well and truly cooked. You can view video of the rescue here.
“Somewhere around the first day of field training some salty cop usually hits you with, 'Kid, you wouldn’t believe what goes on around here if I told you,'” according to the Ossining Police Department's Facebook page. On “Saturday, Officer McGovern has his 'Ah Ha' moment.” As recorded by the officer's body cam, McGovern quickly removed a couple of propane tanks from the danger zone.
While doing so, noticed a dark brown chicken that had taken shelter behind one of the tanks. Skillfully scooping up the clucking fowl, McGovern called out to the homeowners “I got your chicken!” Back at the station, the OPD posted “Congratulations, Officer McGovern. Since the 'Lifesaving Award' doesn’t specifically prohibit the subject of your bravery from being poultry, we will put you in for an award because, well, this is a story that's too good to let go of.” No doubt after reading that, McGovern flipped the webmaster the bird.
