Looking like the bizarre love-children of Godzilla and Hello Kitty, these weirdly cute “Catzilla” figurines can now be bought from Japanese coin-operated gachapon machines.
Jonelle Patrick of “Only In Japan” discovered the Catzilla machine while browsing a gachapon emporium – imagine an entire room filled with coin-op toy machines – in Tokyo's geek mecca of Akihabara.
Six different figurines comprise the series, each featuring a metal loop affixed to the head to facilitate use as a keychain or charm. Four of the figurines are multicolored while two are composed of translucent plastic tinted either red or blue.
Curiously, the Catzilla figurines sport a pair of tails each! We're not sure what the reason for this is – perhaps it makes them more stable when set down in a standing position. On the other hand, Godzilla supposedly was roused from his primordial slumber by atomic bomb testing, the radiation from which gave him enhanced powers so we'll just assume the same for Catzilla.
You may be wondering: why Catzilla and why now? Well, the latest official iteration of the Godzilla film franchise was released in Japan this summer, and no doubt the figurines' manufacturer was eager to ride the wave of publicity. As gachapon machines can increasingly be found in malls here in North America, you might just find Catzilla at a store near you!
