A baby monkey in Jiangxi Province, China, is demonstrating a strong instinct for survival. After being separated from its parents it found a farm with a herd of goats to be its home. It then adopted one particular goat to be its surrogate mother or "nanny." The nanny goat graciously allows the monkey riding privileges as she goes about her day of foraging for food. At night the monkey sleeps with the goats in the barn.
While the farmer, Zhong Shu, has seen the little monkey riding on the backs of different goats, there does seem to be one goat that it favors. The Chinese new agency CCTV released film footage of the little hitchhiker on Wednesday and it is making a splash around the world.
The monkey sneaked onto the farm and into the goat pen just over a week ago seeking asylum. Zhong discovered the little primate while he was out herding his goats and tried to reach out to it. They monkey could not even be bought off with the offer of a banana. It was afraid of the human. Instead it finds safety clinging to the warm body of a goat.
Wildlife officials plan to transfer the monkey to the zoo in the nearby city of Yuchun. The monkey will be rehabilitated and returned to the wild when it is a bit older and more self-sufficient. In the meantime we all get to enjoy how cute this is!
