There are many reasons folks muzzle their dogs, but not all muzzles are created equal. Some really make your dogs look dumb. Okay, foolish. Okay, maybe you think they're cute....
Muzzles are intended to keep a dog from biting. People use them for a variety of other reasons, but ideally they should only be used to prevent biting and only for limited periods of time when you're on a walk or around people. Another great use for a muzzle is when you or a professional groomer is at work on their fur or nails!
If your dog bites, you don't want to take her to a dog park, because other dogs will perceive she is weakened by her muzzle and they will certainly pick on her - and she will feel defenseless. That's not something you want.
Here are some goofy, but perhaps utilitarian dog muzzles made of silicone. Silicone is a super material because it's very durable, comfortable, and pliable. It's also food safe and washable with gentle soap and water. While silicone is molded it is still pliable, so a dog determined to bite in anger may not be prevented. Make sure the fit is right!
The Pawless Duck Mouth Muzzle is popular for small to medium dogs. Some report that it keeps their dogs from biting and nipping during grooming. That is a good use for this type of muzzle. Reports about licking behavior are less enthusiastic, but perhaps it depends on where wounds or other irritations are located on their bodies. Dog parents report that the Pawliss seems to be comfortable for their dogs if they have the right fit.
The Pawless strap wraps around the head, so you will need to measure in a few different places:
Other vendors carry the duck mouth muzzles in different colors.
- NACOCO, for example, carries the silicone duck beaks in yellow, pink, and coffee for small and medium dogs. (see photo at top)
- Citmage uses yellow silicone in its duck muzzle, but carries size large as well as extra-small, small, and medium.
- And ViMall carries the duck muzzle in orange.
(Can you imagine what this dog must be feeling?)
In addition to preventing your dog from biting, the iMichelle Pig Mouth Anti Bite Dog Muzzle should keep him from eating 'stuff' outdoors, although it is recommended that muzzles not be used for this purpose. Dogs don't seem to be crazy about the Pig Mouth, but their owners love it and most report it's effective at preventing biting and nipping. Your dog will not be able to drink or eat in this muzzle so don't keep it on for too long.
Make sure you measure your pup correctly.

Cesar Millan Funny Dog Muzzles
Mr. Millan developed the Funny Dog Muzzles to lessen the fear that people may feel when they see a dog in a traditional muzzle. (It's better for the dog, owner, and observer if you don't show fear to a dog, muzzled or not.)
Millan developed three styles of the Funny Dog Muzzles: Smile, Braces (!), and Dragon. They are made of ballistic nylon and strong mesh and a strap that fits around your dog's head. You can wash them by hand and line-dry them. The fitting instructions require that you measure the area at the widest part of your dog's head. Then, choose a size according to the chart below.
There may be something to these goofy dog muzzles. People get a big kick out of them and dogs get more positive attention when they wear them, so if they achieve their purposes to keep your pup from biting, why not?
That's the buzz for today!
