Even in cold, wet weather, horses need to get out of their stables for several hours a day to walk, run, graze, or just gaze. Hopefully, because horses are very sociable with their buddies, they will have the company of other horses, or at least their owners and handlers. These outings from their stables are called 'turnouts.'
Stable coats are intended to be used when a horse is inside his stable. They are generally lightweight and you can choose between light or heavy insulation. Stable coats or blankets are not waterproof. When outside of the stable, especially In chilly or wet weather, horses need 'turnout coats' to keep them warm and dry. In winter, horses need extra warmth as well as materials that keep them dry. Though turnout coats are generally waterproof, they should not be used in stables because they reduce skin breathability.
For a winter turnout coat, you want to look at the strength of the nylon and the weight of the warming material (generally polyester) to determine how much warmth and moisture protection it will provide. You also want to make sure that the inside layer of the coat is breathable.
If you're living in a moderate winter climate you might look for a lighter weight coat, about 150 grams. In a very cold climate, you would want a heavier weight, 200 or more grams.
You will also want a strong outer layer, so the nylon doesn't rip or tear. Measured in tightness of weave, called denier, I would choose at least a 600 denier nylon, but a really strong coat could be double or triple that strength.
The most important criteria, perhaps, is how well the turnout is designed. Does it stay securely on your horse while enabling him to move freely. But first, you want to measure your horse or pony so you're sure to purchase the appropriate size. Here is how to measure!
Here are 3 Derby Originals' high-quality, flexible winter turnout coats that 'embody' all of these traits for your horses. Notice in the videos below that the Derby Originals allow horses to run quite freely.
