Fresh running water has great appeal to pets. Take cats, for example: it's the rare one who will drink from a bowl of "stagnant" water. And when you think about it, cats have it right... who wants to drink out of a bowl or a glass of water that's been sitting there for a day or so? Perhaps that's why the trend in pet drinking is not the 'pet bowl,' it's the 'pet fountain,' where water flows constantly, or on demand.
Dehydration In Dogs and Cats
Did you know that water makes up 80 percent of dog and cat bodies? In humans, water only accounts for 60 percent of our body weights. So, you see why water is so necessary to our pals...
But sometimes our pets don't drink enough water; it's either not available or there's something amiss - either a physical illness, fear, or depression. Yes, your pet will not drink water when he's depressed or fearful -- and that's exactly when they need to drink the most.
I'm a big fan of adding a bit of chicken broth to water when my dog won't drink. And if my cat doesn't drink from his bowl, I let him drink from the sink's water tap. But these tricks don't always work. And you're not always home. And you know the old saying about leading a horse to water....
How To Tell If Your Pet Is Dehydrated
Excessive heat, or even cold, can dehydrate your pet and, as with humans, there are many medical conditions that can cause dehydration. (Here's a brief summary from Pet Care Rx on the medical conditions that might be responsible for dehydration in your pet.)
Dehydration occurs when your pets don't drink enough water and/or when they are losing water through panting or perspiring through their paws. (See 12 Hot Weather Safety Tips For Your Pets)
You may see indicators of dehydration, but what are the best indicators of dehydration? How do you know when to take your dog or cat to the vet? ASAP! Here is Dr. Allison Smith from PetSafe® giving us some instructions on how to test for dehydration in your dog and cat:
Why Buy A Pet Fountain?
1. Well, you can say, with a pet fountain the same water is just circulating; it's not necessarily fresh. Actually, circulation keeps water fresh by exposing it to fresh oxygen which releases harmful dissolved gases and metals. (source)
2. A pet fountain not only provides fresh water to your pet, but even the subtle sound of the flow reminds your pet that the water is there for him. It's also very soothing, a background noise he may enjoy.
3. It's not just the sound of running water that attract pets, it's the movement. The movement of the water attracts a cat like catnip, but dogs are also attracted to the ripples and bubbles in moving water.
4. Pet fountains, at least the ones listed here, not only circulate water, they clean the water through filters that remove potential contaminants, so your pet gets healthy water at all times. But you must clean the bowls, refill the water supply, and replace the filters according to manufacturer's instructions.
PetSafe makes several pet fountains under its Drinkwell division. The Platinum Pet Fountain is, of course, not really platinum, but it is is a premium pet fountain, with its carbon water filter and continuous flow. It is very straightforward in both design and style and it holds plenty of water - 168 ounces - good for multiple pets. I do prefer pet fountains with water filters as the better the water tastes the more a pet will drink, and who doesn't want as many impurities removed from the water as possible? The Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain is one of the most popular on the market.
This sleek raindrop design makes a fountain suitable for both dogs and cats. The fountain motor keeps fresh water circulating into the bowl and the charcoal filter purifies the water each time it passes through it. The Pioneer Pet Drinking fountain is available in black or white ceramic and in stainless steel. They hold 60 ounces of water enough water for one or two small pets. The bowls are all dishwasher safe.
The CatIt Flower Drinking Fountain, for cats and small dogs, has the advantage of being at neck level of the average height cat. It gives a fresh supply of circulating, filtered water. Catit claims that this system provides the largest surface area of clean running water. The Catit Flower Pet Drinking Fountain is great for multiple pets, as it can be approached from 360 degrees.
Similar to the Catit Fountain above the Dogit Fountain as a 360º platform rotating filtered fresh water for your dog's comfort and enjoyment. The Dogit is especially good for large breed dogs and older dogs with joint and muscle problems. Nice and tall, about 15 inches, this size Dogit Drinking Fountain holds 355 ounces!
The Drinkwell has the advantage of several recirculated streams of water, so two or three animals might drink at one time. The streams also tend to relax pets and humans within hearing distance - although the terrier below has the look that comes just before he pounces on the cat!
The water is purified and, as with the above pet water fountains, the filters are easily available for replacement.
This pretty ceramic dish is not only decorative, fitting into a modern or rustic decor, but it's very versatile way for your pets to 'fill up.' With two drinking levels and a 360 degree water surface, a few animals can enjoy their filtered water at the same time. The Ceramic Avalon Fountain is perfect for small and medium pets. It holds 70 ounces and comes with two filters: one to remove impurities in the water and the other to remove hair and other debris that may end up in the water.
I'm a big fan of this Drinkwell model too. What can I say? I can't resist style as well as function. But style aside, the 360 comes in stainless steel, which means you have to work less to keep it clean. Great for multiple pets, the 360 holds 128 ounces of water. You can adjust the waterfall speed and you can have from one to five waterfall lines. Your pets can drink from the top bowl, a waterfall, or the bowl. The PetSafe Drinkwell 360 Pet Fountain is very accommodating.
Remember to keep your pets hydrated this summer with the freshest water... and do the same for yourself!
