Either too many animals want to cross roads, or we're building too many darned roads. At least someone's making an effort to ensure our furred, feathered, and even scaled friends don't end up as roadkill.

1) Sloth Crossing Sign

10 More Weird Animal Road Crossing Signs

Sloths aren't the speediest creatures – their name kinda says it all – and stopping to allow one of these shaggy, sluggish, even slovenly relatives of anteaters and armadillos to cross safely could seriously affect one's schedule. Even worse if there are more than one of the critters on the molasses-like move. (animal road crossing sign images via Aris Gionis above and Jason Baker at top)

2) Tasmanian Devil Crossing Sign

Runnin' with the devil? Cool, if you're a Van Halen fan. Runnin' OVER the devil, on the other hand, is way UNcool – even worse if you're the devil being run over. All this is irrelevant, of course, if you happen to be Bugs Bunny or some other Looney Tunes character. (animal road crossing sign image via Eli Duke

3) Mule Crossing Sign

10 More Weird Animal Road Crossing Signs

“In the world of mules, there are no rules,” according to the late great American poet Ogden Nash. We beg to differ, however, and as proof we offer the above Mule Crossing sign. Of course, mules are known to be stubborn and may not always follow commands, rules and signs. (animal road crossing sign image via Jay Galvin)

4) Frog Crossing Sign

10 More Weird Animal Road Crossing Signs

Frogs are rather small creatures so crossing a busy street takes more than just a leap of faith – or ANY leap, for that matter. Hopefully signs like these will keep street-crossing frogs from prematurely croaking. (animal road crossing sign image via Barbara Ann Spengler

5) Jaguar Crossing Sign

10 More Weird Animal Road Crossing Signs

If someone driving a Jaguar stops to let a jaguar cross the road, does anyone (besides Xzibit, at least) care? Put another way, if you're out in your E-type and knock down a jaguar trying to cross at this sign, better hope the nearest hospital has plenty of O-type on hand. 6) Bandicoot Crossing Sign

10 More Weird Animal Road Crossing Signs

Aww, isn't that bandicoot cute? Try saying that six times quickly. Cute they may be, but bandicoots can transmit Q Fever to humans who come into contact with their bodily fluids. Just one more very good reason to let them cross the road in peace – and in one piece. (animal road crossing sign image via Greg Schechter)

7) Manatee Crossing Sign

10 More Weird Animal Road Crossing Signs

Oh, the huge manatee... crossing the street?? If that's what you're seeing, maybe avoid Happy Hour at the Dolphin View Restaurant in New Smyrna Beach, FL. Huge manatees crossing area canals and/or waterways are another story, one boat-drivers can vouch for whether they've been drinking or not. (animal road crossing sign image via Rusty Clark

8) Crocodile Crossing Sign

See ya later, street-crossing alligator. In a while, road-traversing crocodile. Wow, Florida drivers sure do have a lot to watch out for. That goes double for Florida walkers. (animal road crossing sign image via dcwriterdawn)

9) Kiwi Crossing Sign

10 More Weird Animal Road Crossing Signs

Flightless birds, crossing my highway? It's more likely than you think... if you're in New Zealand. The island nation located east of Australia holds these odd-looking relatives of ostriches and emus in high regard, so much so that human residents of NZ gladly call themselves Kiwis. That said, does this sign warn against flightless birds or flightless people attempting to cross the road? Best to be sure by stopping for either one. 10) Pukeko Crossing Sign

10 More Weird Animal Road Crossing Signs

We're assuming whomever knocked down the above Pukeko Crossing sign did so after swerving to avoid a pukeko, so all is forgiven. A “pukeko”, by the way, is something one should avoid hitting when it tries to cross the road. Remember, signs can be replaced; pukekos not so much. It's enough to make you sick to your stomach.
