According to Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Alien Species, Tauntauns are "...tall, sturdy creatures with inherently difficult attitudes... [that] have remarkably cold-resistant bodies." They are omnivorous, smelly, and just plain unpleasant to deal with. They also spit--very accurately. Despite having horns, this is their primary source of attack and defense; though not poisonous, the spit freezes upon hitting its target--usually the opponent's eyes. Of course, you can't blame them for the attitude as they are native to the ice planet of Hoth, which sports a very harsh environment.
Introduced in Star Wars, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, the Tauntaun is essentially a giant ice lizard. While hiding from the evil Empire on Hoth, the Rebel Alliance utilized Tauntauns as mounts; this was due to the intensely cold temperatures that caused all modes of mechanical transportation to lock up. Check one out in action, below; the Tauntaun comes into play at the 1:00 mark (though the rest is just plain cool to watch):

So... a giant, furry, horned lizard that spits and has a bad attitude... Sounds like the perfect Halloween costume, right? Oddly enough, a Tauntaun makes a really great costume thanks to the Rebels riding them. Some of these are actually home made--and they look great! Check out this full-size Tauntaun, complete with Rebel trooper:

This is a very impressive costume! Just the height alone is daunting. I can firmly state that I would take two steps then fall on my side--I'm no good on stilts. I also question the beer drinking ability while costumed this way. Again, I'd end on my side, flopping on the ground--at which time some guy with a lightsaber would try to cut my guts out...

I would assume that Tauntauns aren't always so large. As such, even tiny Rebels need a way of getting around to fight for freedom. Hence, the tiny Tauntaun.

Cuteness overload! And a great costume! Just look at the detail! I bet this kid went to school as a Tauntaun, slept in the Tauntaun (it happens...), and possibly wore the Tauntaun to church on Sundays. That's how cool this costume is.
And then there's this guy:

Well... it is creative. I'm just not sure that it works very well. To me the poor guy looks like a runaway from Sesame Street with a baby erupting from his torso. Of course that's just my view of it...
If you're out of time, you can go the store-bought route:
The Rubies Costumes Unisex Star Wars Inflatable Tauntaun Adult Costume is... interesting. An officially licensed Star Wars product, this ice lizard retails for $46.00 and sort of throws reality out the door. It requires 4 AA batteries to power an internal fan. At least I think it is internal to keep the Jedi rider's legs cool. Or is it to inflate the Tauntaun? I'm a bit fuzzy on this point.
So, if you are looking for a way-cool costume--or (in a few cases) something that will make your friends wonder what in the hell you were thinking--a Tauntaun may be the way to go! Depending on what you're looking for, you can go from realistic to cheesy.
Personally, I want a larger version of that kid's costume!
