VeaPets Luxury Cat Hammock

A hammock is typically loose hanging, defined as a "swinging couch or bed usually made of netting or canvas and slung by cords from supports at each end."

If you've ever tried to get into or on top of a typical porch hammock, it can be frustrating and possibly embarrassing, but once you're there, a comfortable rest is your reward for your efforts.

So too with cats whose owners afford them the luxury and, uh, the challenge of a cat hammock. Here's Timo The Cat conquering his cat hammock:

Once a cat conquers the 'beast' that calls itself a hammock, you'll have trouble getting her out of it. It feels bottomless, weightless and, sinking beneath a level surface, your cat feels hidden from the world.

The challenge of conquering a cat hammock is that the corners are not stable, but can swing from their hooks, like the CUSFULL Cat Hammock Bed below.

These 'free-floating' cat hammocks need to be attached to something sturdy, usually a metal crate as is the UsefulThingy Cat Hammock....

The Cat Crib, below, was the original under-chair hammock and is a cool way to incorporate your cat into your living area.

The Cat Crib straps should be attached to square wooden legs 8"-27" apart from each other.  It will hold about 11-12 pounds. Make sure the bottom doesn't touch the floor when your cat is on it; you want the hammock to be suspended.

SmartyKat makes a chair-hanger that works a bit differently. Called the Happy Hammock, it hangs from the seat of the chair rather than the chair legs:

The free-floating cat hammock is most appropriate for small cats, kittens, and other small animals

Unfortunately, there are not many free-flowing cat hammocks available for larger cats. The closest I've come to finding one for larger cats (20 - 30 pounds) is the Via Pets Luxury Cat Hammock, below:

The heavy material on the Via Pets Luxury Cat Hammock helps stabilize your cat when on the hammock.

Of course, you can create your own free-floating cat hammock, using materials that support your cat's weight. This blog has some great ideas that are not too difficult to do yourself.

That's the buzz for today!
