It's gaming cats & dogs thanks to this richly detailed cats & dogs chess set that makes every player a pet-loving pawn star.
To paraphrase Mongo from Blazing Saddles, pets only pawns (and rooks, bishops, etc) in game of chess. The big guy ain't lyin' since each and every chess piece is cast in the form of a cat or a dog. It's an interesting take on the old black vs white classic and even if one doesn't play chess, simply displaying the ready-for-action board is guaranteed to impress all and sundry.
The pieces are modeled after actual breeds of cats and dogs. For example, the dog side's King is a Great Dane and the Bishops are Saint Bernards. Over on the cat side, a golden Maine Coon makes a regal King while the Knights are Siamese Cats.
An especially interesting feature of the set is the manner in which the Rooks (or Castles, to some) are depicted: for the dog side it's a doghouse; on the cat side it's a raised wickerwork platform. The whole kit & caboodle - the playing pieces, at least - store inside a convenient and secure wooden case that doubles as the chessboard.
Several variations of the cats & dogs chess set have been made, one of which can be purchased at Amazon. We prefer the more naturalistic look of this set, however – the cats and dogs are unclothed except for the crowns worn by the Kings and Queens. This set is being offered at Amazon (Japan) for 26,784 yen, or roughly $270. (via ITmedia, MoeroChina, and NetGeek)
