A pair of Québec provincial police officers must have looked like steak on a stake-out to an overly inquisitive black bear who stopped to share a selfie.

As most any policeman will tell you, the job involves 90 percent boredom and 10 percent sheer terror... and a taste of the latter makes the former look pretty darn good! No doubt these two Sûreté du Québec constables would agree after experiencing an unexpected and frightening encounter with a persistently curious black bear last Tuesday, July 3rd.

The smokeys were out patrolling along Québec Route 167, an isolated provincial highway near the Ashuapmushuan Nature Reserve, about 500 kilometres (310 miles) north of Montreal. Pulling their cruiser onto the shoulder to check their bearings, they were suddenly surprised by an adult black bear – or, the bear was surprised by the police car. Maybe both.

In any case, the officers were effectively imprisoned inside their cruiser as the curious critter circled their vehicle, even jumping onto the hood at one point. The constables had no choice but to shoot and... wait a minute, this is Canada! Their firearms remained holstered – the only shooting was via their smartphones.

Before the officers (or the bear) could call for back-up, a passing truck driver arrived at the scene. A few blasts of the semi's air horn were enough to coax the overly-attached ursine back into the forested hinterland. “An animal can cross your route at any time, be careful when you travel!,” cautioned the Sûreté du Québec, who neglected to add “only you can prevent forest fears.” (via CBC)
