Nylabone T-Rex Dog Teething Toy

Dogs need to chew. Chewing does so many things for them. Yes, it satisfies a puppy's needs during teething (usually between 4 and 6 - 7 months of age), but beyond that period in their lives, dogs continue to require chewing activity. They will have boundless energy for years to come and appropriate chewing helps them express and release some of that energy and to keep their teeth and gums healthy.

The benefits of providing suitable chewing toys for your puppy far outweigh their costs. If you buy your puppy appropriate chewing toys, it will not only save your furniture legs, pillows, shoes, and door frames, it will establish a positive habit, because dogs chew far beyond their teething periods. Chewing bones at an early age helps teach them early on what is acceptable and what is not.

Here are some great chew toys made especially for teething puppies. Do not leave your puppy alone with chew toys. They do not break or tear easily, but they can, so supervise your dog and inspect toys before providing them.

These toys are for dogs only!

1. Nylabone Puppy Chew Toys Bundle Starter Pack

Nylabone, a brand almost synonymous with 'dog bones,' makes special chews for teething puppies. Though these products can be purchased individually, it makes good sense to buy them as a pack. One toy is not enough to entertain a puppy for very long, and these chew toys can be used well beyond the teething period.

The toys with the nubs and raised surfaces are the most suitable for a teething pup; the others can be added to his repertoire later. If you keep them in the freezer, they will help your puppy reduce the pain of teething.

You can see why a puppy would go crazy with all these toys. Introduce them one at a time, so your dog will enjoy each toy as unique. Once they have all been introduced, rotate them for your dog so she doesn't get bored.

Nylabone provides chew toys for each size of dog. Puppies should always start with puppy-specific chews until they are at least finished teething.

2.  Kong Puppy Rubber Chew & Treat Toy

Kong is another very well known maker of dog toys and its iconic shape is present in the Kong Puppy that comes in baby pink and baby blue.

The Puppy Kong is a fun chew toy for your pup; not only that, but you can put treats inside! Puppy kibble and peanut butter will keep them interested longer. The Puppy Kong comes in four sizes depending on the size of the puppy you have and the Kong company provides a chart to indicate the size of Puppy Kong you need based on the breed of dog. The same chart indicates the size and toughness you'll need later on in your dog's life.

If you have a mixed breed, perhaps you can determine the right size for your puppy by the current size of your dog or how large your dog might get.... The extra small Puppy Kong is 1.4 x 1.4 x 2.25 inches, the small is 3 x 1.8 x 1.8 inches, the medium is 3.4 x 2.2 x 2.2 inches and the large is 4 x 2.8 x 2.8 inches. Remember, these are for puppies, and the Kong Company recommends that they not be used after 9 months of age. Then you can switch to the adult-size Kong toys.

Don't forget to use the Kong Puppy to play fetch with your dog. The Kong Puppy will give him a fun run-around, as it has an unpredictable bounce.

3.  Kong Puppy Teething Stick

The Kong Puppy Teething Stick is a bit sassy too, with its unpredictable bounce. With finely-toothed slits in the slats (don't say that fast!), your dog can exercise her teeth and gums gently, and she can also access the treats inside.

You can slap some peanut butter in between the slats and there are also treat holes in each end of the Teething Stick.  It might be easier for you to use some of the Kong Stuffin' Treats that come in dispensing cans that squirt the treat out like whipped cream.

The Easy Treats are available in peanut butter, chicken, and pepperoni flavors.

4. N-Bone Puppy Teething Rings

The N-Bones are actually edible teething rings. They are made of wheat-free, natural ingredients and are flavored with chicken or pumpkin.

N-Bone recommends a maximum of 5 -7 rings per week, depending on the size of your dog. That being said, there are only six rings in one bag, so obviously you will have to supplement these treat rings with other teething items for your puppies. But puppies do seem to love them and I think they'd be a great addition to other puppy teething toys and treats.

5. Alvi & Remi Puppy Chew Teething Rope Toys

Rope toys are another must-have in your basket of teething toys. Puppies and dogs just love them. They provide a more cushy experience than rubber and bones, and puppies love to chew on their variations and textures.

This link has three different packages of rope toys. Each contain a different variety of choices, but the reviews indicate that this brand uses high-quality rope - they are made of 100% cotton and floss fabric. They are also washable.  Don't forget, ropes are also great throw-toys!

Puppies have so much energy and they can drain humans, even kids, of their own energy.  In addition to providing plenty of puppy-specific teething toys, make sure that your puppy gets outside to walk, play, and socialize with other dogs as soon as he's had all of his shots!  The more exercise your puppy gets, the less she'll get into trouble tearing up your home. But if she does indicate that destruction's on her mind, physically move her away from her desired object to an acceptable teething toy and reward her for 'choosing that' herself!

That's the buzz for today!
