With increasing frequency humans are looking to their pets as family members worthy of treatment once formerly reserved for other humans. Now, we treat them more like our kids than furry companions. The pet industry sees millions of dollars in revenue each year as more and more people lavish their “kids” with products fit for VIPs, and we don’t feel a lick of guilt about it. Whether we just have more disposable income or we’ve grown softer views, the fact remains that we want only the best for our four-legged pals. Marketers have picked up on this trend and run with it. So has a bedding company called Casper that is now making dog mattresses Rover will love.
Casper Bedding Company
Casper is a startup out of New York known for its bedding, as in sheets and pillows, and its mattresses. Recently, they decided to expand their product line to include memory foam dog beds, or mattresses, as they’d prefer to call them. Realizing that many pets already sleep with their owners — uh, I mean parents, the group decided to make a mattress so comfortable that it would rival mom and dad’s bed. To do this, Casper says they spent time and money studying canine sleep patterns to come up with a Three Bears winner in the form of a “Baby Bear” bed for dogs.
When queried about their mission, this was the answer to the company’s foray into pet beds: “For almost two years, we studied the sleep patterns of dogs of all shapes and sizes. We even worked with a dog psychologist to learn more about canine behavior and used scanning electron microscopy to understand the interaction of different dog furs with different textiles,” said Jeff Chapin, the company’s co-founder and chief product officer, in a statement. “After developing dozens of prototypes, we finally found the perfect combination of materials to create a mattress that every dog loves to sleep on.”
Mattresses for Dogs
So, what makes this mattress so special that dogs will want to sleep on it rather than in your bed? Much like Casper’s human mattresses, their new dog mattresses are designed with comfort in mind. The company uses pressure-relieving memory foam combined with a durable support foam with a shape viewed as being comfortable for a dog’s entire body. Because canines have different needs than their owners, Casper did the aforementioned research into their innate sleeping and nesting habits. With all of that research under their belts, the group came up with a loose fabric surface designed to withstand a dog’s attempts at digging or den building.
If you’ve got a memory foam mattress or mattress topper, you know how comfortable it is to sleep on. A lot of people don’t realize that the material was first designed in the mid-1960s for NASA airplane seats. The resultant product is made from a substance called viscoelastic that is both highly energy absorbent and soft. It’s immense popularity stems from the fact that it molds to the body in response to heat and pressure, while evenly distributing body weight.
If you’ve got an older dog or cat that finds it more difficult to sleep or find a comfortable position to get into, a memory foam pet bed just might be the answer. You can discover more about Casper and their products at their official website, if you’re interested.
