Cats need to keep their claws sharp; it's a primal behavior and they do it throughout their whole lives. So, as cat parents we need to furnish them with suitable scratching surfaces or they will destroy our homes.
Fortunately the pet industry does not disappoint in the kinds of scratching devices we can buy our cats, and I've written about many of them, but here are 7 fabulous new designs that look pretty cool and offer kitty some alternatives to "cat condos."
Isn't this a clever climber? Great for kittens and small cats, the FUKUMARU Cat Activity Tree with Scratching Posts can be attached to a wall or to a cat gate. A nice, simple design, each level is divided by a modern extended 11 inch perch for curling up or reaching kitty's top shelf!
Easy to put together in about 15 minutes (according to the seller and the customers), the box includes everything you need to put it together, even the tools, along with diagrammed instructions.
The scratching poles on the FUKUMARU Cat Activity Tree are wound with jute, rather than sisal. The manufacturer chose jute because it is a softer material than sisal. When your kitty has scratched them silly, you can order replacements.
What a sweet piece of kitty furniture. It's a bed, a hideaway, and a scratcher's heaven. Appropriate for kittens or small cats, the tunnel is 14. 5” wide, 24” long, and 7" high. And the tunnel opens at both ends!
Upscale and indeed refined, the silver Calypso Cat Scratcher fits right in to the modern living room. Even so, at 31" high and 16" in diameter, the Calypso doesn't take up much space at all. And when your cat's doing her thing, the Calyso has a weighted bottom to keep her from tipping it over.
The Calypso is made of faux rattan which is wrapped around a wired frame. The THE REFINED FELINE Calypso Cat Scratcher is "claw resistant" and non toxic.
A new take on an old resting scratcher, the RISEPRO 2-in-1 Cat Scratcher, offers a lot of scratch for one cat or multiple cats. Note you can also turn the outer scratcher upside down for a third platform for claw exercises!
If you can get your teenager to stand on the RISEPRO 2-in-1 Cat Scratcher, it will proove that this cat furniture is pretty sturdy.
I'm surprised it's taken so long for the pet market to start making sisal mats - not necessarily for cats, but especially for cats.
The Infinity Star makes a nice non-slip mat that your cat can scratch without having to chase it around. It's 11.8" wide and 15.7" long.
Recycled corrugated cardboard is a very popular scratching surface for cats, and almost as popular as sisal or jute scratching surfaces. They tend to be less expensive than sisal products, but they also tend to be easier to destroy, depending on your cat, of course.
But cats find these surfaces irresistable, so you should have at least one of the many offerings in your home. Cat lounges are the newest trend. And the ScratchMe Cat Scratching Lounge is very highly recommended by cat lovers, ScratchMe claims it's because its materials are stronger than other manufacturer's.
You know a happy cat when you see one, and the Necoichi Cozy Cat Scratcher Bowl has made many a cat very happy, according to their owners. Cats like to curl up and sleep 'in the round,' so the round Scratcher Bowl is a perfect shape for kitty - this one for kitties up to about 12 pounds. You judge; the diameter is 15.75 inches and the bed is 4 inches deep.
The scratcher is an insert in a wood-like frame...
... and the centers can be replaced when worn.
The Necoichi Cozy Cat Scratcher Bowl and the other new models of kitty scratchers above are great additions to your cat's collection of scratching surfaces. You can find many more featured cat scratchers and condos at this link.
That's the buzz for today!
