Rodents clean themselves in sand, and though many rodent owners don't know this, their pet mice, rats, gerbils, chinchillas, and hamsters, would love it if you provide them with a sand bathtub. They love to roll around in sand (or dust) and some even sleep in it. Perhaps most importantly, sand baths help these little creatures to resolve stress, which is common among pet rodents.
NEVER BATHE YOUR SMALL PET IN WATER! Remember, pet rodents are easily stressed, and water is foreign to them. As desert animals, bathing in sand comes naturally to them. Water is for drinking.
Here are five special sand or dust bathtubs for your little guys and a couple of special sand recommendations for their baths.
The best selling small animal bath on Amazon, the Kaytee is a nice, sturdy ceramic shell for your critters to bathe in or just hang out. It's entry is 3.5" x 3.5" so it's good for your very small guys. Inside, it's 4.5" high. The Kaytee Ceramic Critter Bath comes in 4 colors - lavender, yellow, blue, and green - but you cannot specify which color you want, so be flexible.
A good size chinchilla needs a good size bathtub and the Kaytee Chinchilla Bath House is 8.5" high and 9" wide. The plastic tub allows you to watch your baby roll around in his sand - a sample of which is provided with the Bath House. The Chinchilla Bath comes in several colors, but orders are filled randomly.
If you would like a stylish ceramic bathtub for your small buddy, the Laak Small Creature Ceramic Bath House is it! You might not have room for it in your pet's cage, but if you can let him hang around an area of your bathroom sink, that would be a fitting place for it. The Laak is 5.9" by 4.7" x 5.1." If this doesn't work out as a chinchilla bathtub, there are many other ways you can use this nice ceramic shell - like a jewelry holder? It's easy to clean thoroughly; that's the best part of it.
The Small Animal Plastic Hamster Bathtub comes as a 2-set with scoops, so you can use one as a bath and another as a toilet for your pet. Each one is tiny enough to fit in a small animal cage at 5.9" x 3" by 3". I would say this bath is perfect for the tiniest of your rodent pets.
You have a 360º view of your little critter and he of you from the SatisPet Hamster Bath. The SatisPet is 6.22" x 4.53" x 4.02" and has a 2.68" wide opening, so some hamsters will fit and others, like Teddy Bears, probably won't. The SatisPet is easy to take apart and clean, always a consideration.
Bath Sands And Powders
The three most preferred sands or dust are Kaytee Critter Bath Powder, which is made of fine mountain pumice stone (makes dust), OxBow Poof Chinchilla Dust, and, if you want a dust free bath solution, Supreme Tiny Friends Farm Chinchilla Bathing Sand is an excellent choice.
All of the above small pet baths may be used as potties for your pets with different filler, but potty training should begin as soon as you bring the little guy home. Here's a great video on potty training your small animal.
Later, you can introduce your pets to a small animal bath tub just to take a bath. If bathing doesn't come naturally to them, you can encourage them to use sand or dust by rubbing it on their bodies a little at a time as in this YouTube video.
Before you know it, your small pet will be flipping in their dust like this chinchilla below....
